Understanding Batting Average

In cricket, a player's batting average is the total number of runs they have scored divided by the number of times they have been out. It is one of the most significant statistics used to measure a batsman's consistency and skill.

The Formula

Average = Total Runs / (Innings Started - Times Not Out)

What is a Good Average?

  • 30-35: Considered solid for a regular batsman in international cricket.
  • 40-50: Represents a very good player who is consistent.
  • 50+: Legendary status. Only the absolute best maintain an average above 50 over a long career (e.g., Don Bradman, Steve Smith).

Why "Not Outs" Matter

If a batsman remains "Not Out" at the end of an innings, that innings does not count towards the denominator (number of outs). This rewards players who finish games and protect their wicket, boosting their average significantly.
