What is Net Run Rate (NRR)?

Net Run Rate is the preferred method for breaking ties in multi-team tournaments. It essentially measures a team's winning margin. A high positive NRR means a team is scoring fast and restricting opponents well.

NRR = (Runs For ÷ Overs Faced) – (Runs Against ÷ Overs Bowled)

The Formula

Key Rules

  • All Out: If a batting team is bowled out before completing their overs, the calculation uses the full quota of overs (e.g., 20.0 or 50.0), punishing them for losing wickets early.
  • Winning Margins: Winning by a big margin runs-wise or chasing a target quickly with many overs to spare boosts NRR significantly.
  • Tournament Standings: It is usually the second sorting criteria after Points.
